Meet Joe Bear

The other day L decided that each of her bears must wear a diaper. She was quite concerned that they might make a poo-poo or pee-pee without one. When I asked her if they could use the potty she said, "No, baby bears." L's Abby Cadaby doll is often sitting in L's potty, where L claps and cheers her on to make a poo-poo. ( According to L Abby is not a baby. However a few times I have also found Abby wrapped in a diaper.) As you can guess we are doing a lot of potty talk in this household.

After each bear was properly diapered L decided that they were cold and needed to wear clothes. She thus produced an outfit for each bear, hats and shoes included.

Making sure that all their attire is properly placed.

She put on a hat and joined the bear gang.

I asked, "What is this bear's name?" Without missing a beat, "JOE BEAR, JOE BEAR!" She calls Joe "Daddy Joe."

This one is "Ducky"

"Joe Bear walking, walking, Joe Bear walking."

"Yellow Bear" got to ride the horse.

Lined up all her bears for "Bears hold hand!"

L joined them to "read" a book. She has started "reading" non picture books, sometimes.

But soon it was replaced by "Once Upon a Potty". I wouldn't say this is her favorite book, but it utterly fascinates her.

She stares at the pictures that show poo-poo/pee-pee the longest, and often makes comments. "Uh-oh! Poo-poo floor."

And November is almost to a close

One of the main reasons why I keep a blog is for documenting our life, or more preciously documenting Linnnea. For time is rather fleeting and the silly/cute new discovery/accomplishment of this week will quickly be forgotten with the even greater ones of next. Unfortunately for documenting purposes our life is busy. It is not a complaint, for we love our life, and have gotten much better at finding balance (i.e. actually turning down some things). Nonetheless, in this past month we have hosted a baby shower and a dad to be shower, went to a surprise party, another baby shower, had friends over for dinner, went to two Thanksgiving dinner parties, went to a Sunday night Football party, a 2nd birthday party, watched one of our favorite toddlers for a weekend, went to a dozen parks, took even more walks, went to the zoo, pushed a trike around Sherwood, made more playdough balls than I can count, baked more than I can remember, taught a toddler how to use a paint brush, and a stamp kit, laughed with the people most dear to me, spent much needed quality time with my girlfriends, and maintained weekly much more needed date night watching Hulu/Netflix, laughing, talking, and cuddling with Joe. It is a whirlwind, and somehow I am once again behind on my blog, so tonight I am going to attempt to document the things I don't want to forget (sortof grateful that I have yet to learn photoshop, that is [editing pictures] one less compulsion to do before posting a blog). Mirmar, Oma, Grandad and Auntie I hope you enjoy :-)

A weekend with Derek

On Friday evening I received one of those phone calls that leaves you dropping all that you were doing, forgetting what ever may of been bothering you, and praying frantically without ceasing. My very good friend Jen, who was 30 weeks pregnant with identical twin boys, called to say her water broke. As fast as I could move I jumped into my car and drove (the speed limit) to their house to pick up their son Derek.

We met Mike and Jen in our birthing class. They sat two seats away, and had a due date 3 days before us. Jen and I both joined the same baby group and in this past year our families have grown very close. Mike and Jen are people that both Joe and I respect and very much admire. They have a Christian faith very much like our own, and have similar convictions about what that faith should look like played out in their lives. As parents, they have very similar parenting styles. As people, they are about as sincere, real and honest as it gets.

Mike and Jen went strait to the hospital, where Jen was quickly given the terbutaline shot to stop labor and put on a magnesium drip. However, the contractions never fully stopped and by late Saturday night a C-Section was needed to deliver their tiny precious twin boys, Nate and Will. Nate and Will are doing much better than would be expected, but please follow their blog and pray for the boys. http://mikeandjensnews.blogspot.com/

Derek knows us really well, and he has spent a good amount of time at our house. But as any parent of a young child knows change is hard on kids, even when the parents are there. If you put L (our child who has been sleeping 12 + hours through the night since 9 weeks) in her pack-n-play in a new location and all bets are off as far as sleep goes. I also know that no matter how familiar a place is it is not the same as being home and with your own mom and dad. We were expecting a rough weekend with sleepless nights. We didn't mind one bit. Our number one concern with Derek at our house was making him feel loved, safe, and comfortable. We didn't care if it was going to be a difficult weekend for us; we were just very concerned about the little guy being away from his parents for the first time.

We prayed a lot, Mike and Jen prayed a lot, their families and friends prayed a lot. And God was with all of us. Without a doubt the Lord was in our home comforting Derek. The moment I brought him back L and Derek greeted each other with a big hug. We fed them dinner, Joe played with them very hard for an hour or so, and then we began bedtime routines. L first cause we knew she would instantly fall asleep, and then Derek. To our surprise Derek also instantly fell asleep, and to our greater surprise he did not wake again till 8 am in the morning.

Upon waking the next day he greeted me with a big smile and a hug. He instantly wanted to see L and they quickly resumed their playtime from the night before. The morning went great, and then at nap time we were surprised even more. At his home Derek often sings himself to sleep, and not surprisingly started to sing when we laid him down in his room at our house. But L instantly started singing back! The two of them, in their own rooms with their doors shut, sang rounds to each other for about 30 minutes before they both fell asleep for a two hour nap! The same thing occurred the next day at nap time too.

The stories of the weekend are endless. Derek and L often held hands in the car as we drove. They shared their food with each other, and their toys. There was not one fight between the two of them, and even more impressive neither child had tantrum the entire weekend! Derek fit right into our family as if he had always belonged there. We were all very sad to say good bye to him on Sunday evening (Jen's mom was able to fly in and stay with them).

Topless Friday night dinner. Enjoy it while you can kiddos.

Now on to Morning Playtime!

L shared her prized Elmo Shoes with Derek.

And if you look closely you will see that L happily wore her pink fairy shoes.

Derek liked to give L rides on her push car. L happily accepted the offers.

Sharing string cheese.

Picking up some speed.

Tunnel time!

They thought it was really funny if they went through the tunnel at the same time but opposite directions.

Conversing about something.

They both look rather guilty here.

The funny thing about the slide is Derek never went on it. Derek is a child of no fear, and is master climber. But instead of going on the slide himself he would direct and cheer L on.

See Clapping for L.

And L liking the attention.

L clapping Derek on as he turns up the volume on the ipod. I honestly think we played Raffi's "Six Little Ducks" song about two dozen times in a row.

Derek always bring L her sippy cup of milk.

Derek likes to clean floors. I mean really likes to clean floors. He would use the popcorn popper as his vacuum while carrying the broom and dustpan.

L thought she would come help.

Note how Derek is now carrying the popper as he sweep.

That's right I clean.

And I am super cute. Didn't you read my shirt?

They played chase endlessly. Derek would chase L one direction. They both laugh. Then L would chase Derek the other direction. They both laugh. On and on it went.

Don't let the Tutu Fool You

For the last five days in a row L insisted on wearing a tutu wherever we go. It is, and I quote my friend Jen, "stinkin adorable."
But don't let the tutu fool you. This girl can throw overhand, can catch a ball, LOVES semi-trucks, tractors, dump trucks, building blocks, tool sets and cars. On the other hand she also loves babies, baby dolls, kitties, stickers, tutus, shoes, and jewelry. Lets just call her well rounded.

Day One: L picked out her entire outfit. Apple jeans, GREEN apple shirt, pink flower hat, red shoes, pink socks, and of course the pink tutu over the jeans. I insisted on the white undershirt since it is cold out.

The side view cracks me up.

Yeah, that's right folks.

Day 4 I was a bit surprised at first because she was so agreeable with what I chose. She was insist on wearing boots, bu I was intending boots anyway. I set her down, she went straight to her closet, pointed and said, "Red tutu, Mommy. Please!"

Again the side view makes me laugh.

We were literally heading out the door when L stopped, turned around, and opened the side drawer pulled out the lint brush and started rolling her vest as she sees me do. Luckily the camera was sitting on the same side drawer.

A Package From Auntie

My sister just sent L another package, and once again my sister nailed the unknown desires of L's heart.

Sorry for the PJ's but we typically start our day with a craft.

Just opened the package and went strait for the stamp kit. It didn't take long before she stamped her cheek.

And her other cheek, and her hand, and the counter. I promise she also stamped a lot of paper too. I love the person who invented washable ink!

All washed and next item up: kitty stickers and a sticker book!

What, Mom? I am sort of busy here.

Must be very gentle when transferring the small sticker.

Smile, someone really likes this book.

And what book is it? Cinderella: My Perfect Wedding
L says, "pretty" a lot when reading it. And when our pal Derek was over she kept bringing it to him. Hmm, could that be a hint?

Another crafting morning of stamping. I upgraded her stamp pad.

And she stamped her arms. Oops, I mean "tattooed her sleeves".

The Transformation

We have two cats. I know, surprise! But we really do have another cat besides the wonderful and strange Oscar. We haven't tried to shun our second cat, Rudyard. The thing is has never really liked us. Oh sure, he LOVES Oscar, but Oscar adopted Rudyard as a kitten. Oscar bathed him, cuddled him, fought a dog for him, and even let little Rudyard suck on his man cat nipple. (Did I mention that Oscar is strange?)

Since maturing into a neutered man cat Rudyard went the way of all spoiled ferrell cats-you know, the ones who act like they are a stray but actually do have a warm home and a filled food bowl. Rudyard preferred sleeping outside, preferred playing outside, preferred catching his own meals outside. However, the bond one has with the man cat who nursed him is strong, so even Rudyard had to come into our house occasionally. Mostly, just for a few bites of cat food, and a quick bath from Oscar.

L's favorite color is yellow. One of L's favorite books is Charlie, a sweet tale about how Charlie the stray cat saves the day and finds a loving home. In the first couple of pages Charlie meets an old stray tomcat named Yellow Cat. Yellow cat does not appear beyond page 2. L LOVES Yellow Cat.

One recent morning Rudyard was standing at the glass backdoor asking to come in for his daily five minutes indoors. L noticed him and instantly started pointing, and cheering "YELLOW CAT, YELLOW CAT, YELLOW CAT!" As Rudyard came in, L attacked him with her gentle (yes, she actually is extremely gentle) pets, soft hugs, and a million kisses. All the while chanting "Yellow Cat!"

I stood there in shock. Our cat who hates us to touch him, or be to close to him, was happily taking L's onslaught. Rudyard ate his food, and L continued expressing her love. I went to the door expecting our normal routine of Rudyard ate, Rudyard leaves. But instead the cat went to the living room and laid on the floor for more L love. Latter I put L down for a nap, but kept hearing her say "Yellow Cat!" and laughing. I thought she was just reiterating her day as she often does, but it just didn't stop. So after about 40 minutes I peaked my head in and there was Rudyard in her crib!

Over a week has passed and Rudyard, who has now been renamed Yellow Cat, has truly transformed. He rarely goes outside, climbs in my lap, allows us to pet him, and is almost always either with L, or in her bed. Moreover, he appears to like the care she gives him. Maybe it reminds him of the forceful, but gentle way Oscar is. Sorry Yellow Cat, don't even think about nursing our little girl!

A typical morning for Yellow Cat:

Here Yellow let me tuck you in with my baby and water bottle that I can't sleep without.

You need a bedtime story.

How's this? Hmm, you don't seem to be reading it.

No worries, I will read you this book on the floor instead.

Oh no, Yellow! You lost your blanket.

Here let me help you with that.

And here is another blanket. Got to keep my Yellow Cat warm.

Ah, this is the life.

Foiled

This morning the sun came out! Let me say that again, THE SUN CAME OUT! The sun has been hiding for quite awhile now, and is already back to hiding. But for those brief hours of sun I honestly could not of been happier. So I loaded L into the car and filled our morning with sun, ducks and an outdoor play park.
I brought my camera hoping to capture a few cute pictures of my darling in the sunshine. However, my darling found my camera to be rather annoying. When looking at the ducks I mostly just got the back of her pigtails, and the few brief moments when she gave me the "Please leave me alone mom, I am looking at ducks" look. Then at the playground I sacrificed a minor concussion to get a couple rare smiling pictures. But mostly I was just foiled, as she would turn her head or grimace if she saw my lens peaking her way.

L sees the bridge and points to where the ducks are.

L runs to the bridge where the ducks are.

L glues herself to the bridge to view the ducks.

And glues herself for a good fifteen minutes as I call her name in vain, longing for her to look up at me so I can take a cute picture.

She finally looks up! And I get the "look".

That is alright L, you just go back to looking at the ducks. I will wait.

Yes! She has moved on to the playground I will get a good photo here!

Mom, seriously stop with the camera already.

Hmm, if I ignore Mom maybe the camera will go away.

Nope, Mom is still trying.

AH-HA! My persistence has paid off, there is a smile, L and I got it!!!!

And that one too! YES!

Um Mom, are you Ok? I think that was a pole you just walked into.
